I have a friend who walks to and from work every day. On his way home, Roderick stops to sit on a bench, and simply wait.

Who or what is he waiting for?

What makes him frequently smile like a toddler who’s just opened the cabinet with all the pots and pans?

How does he seem so content after he sits for such long periods of silence?

Roderick has given me hours of wisdom stemmed from his observations about creation. Yesterday, he deposited yet another gem into my spiritual bank account.

He knows I’m in a heavy testing phase and encouraged me to become more like a tree. A tree? Lately, I feel like proverbial firewood that’s been scorched.

Roderick explained his reflections from his Tree of Knowledge:

  • Trees have stability.
  • They aren’t worried about who climbs on them.
  • They share their colors with everyone.
  • Trees don’t judge who sits under them for shade, shelter, or rest.
  • Fruit trees allow everyone to freely pick their produce.
  • Trees have a long-life span. Even when they get cut down, they allow themselves to be refashioned into cabinets, paper, furniture, homes.

Wow.

That short conversation reaped abundant harvest! After Roderick and I finished our call, I walked outside to see trees in a fresh light.

I thought about what how my outlook could change if I adopted some of the ways a tree shows up for life.

What if I changed colors freely without trying to order what shade I wanted to be?

What if I allowed myself to be used for whatever my “wood” was needed for at the time?

How would my life be different if I opened myself to be replanted in new surroundings?

I pause to recognize valuable lessons I’ve gained from creation. Before I become over-contemplative, I’ll use Roderick’s from his Tree of Knowledge vantage point.

His priceless insights make me think….Hmmmm, maybe money can grow on trees.

I encourage you to get outside, look up. Look around. We continue learning when we invest time in nature’s classroom.

Let’s grab our shoes and head outside with a curious mind. Let’s be open to find lessons and blessin’s along our way.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll see you!

Reader! Your turn.

What discoveries have you made when you’ve surrounded yourself with nature?

What have you learned from creation?
